Jira roadmaps are there to help you organize your stories around deadlines. we shouldn’t pretend that deadlines do not exist, they do, and they are an integral part of delivering products and services.

Roadmaps can be created from already existing stories or stories can be created directly from roadmaps. We will be creating a roadmap and associating with the roadmap already existing stories.

Creating the roadmap

  1. Select Roadmap from the left menu bar

  2. Image Added

    In the Releases column enter the name of the Epic (the high-level elements on a Roadmap are Epics). Enter the Epic name TODO Single User

  3. If you hover your mouse to the right of the field a plus symbol (plus) will appear. You can use this to create stories directly onto the Epic. We will not be adding stories here at the moment

  4. Hover your mouse over any month column but on the same row as the Epic, an epic time bar will appear

    The time is initially 14 days long (a typical sprint). Also, the time bar will have no start point until you click on a point in time on the roadmaps schedule. Don’t left-click your mouse, but simply move your mouse left and right, and you will see that that time bar moves accordingly.

  6. Select a point on the roadmap schedule and left-click the mouse.

  7. You drag the time bar left or right by left-clicking anywhere on the time bar (except on its edges) and dragging the time bar left or right. Try it.

  8. Two bars (handles) appear to the left and right of the time bar, and its color becomes more solid.

    Move your mouse to either handle, left-click and hold the handle. You can now drag the handle left or right to lengthen or shorten the time of the Epic

Adding Stories to the Epic

  1. Navigate to the projects issues

    You will notice that all your issues and epics are there

    Thinking about the epic, decide which stories should be part of the epic. Select one of the stories

    If your view looks like this and a dialog window did not open, expand the More fields and select the Epic Link

    Select the epic that you want to attach this story to

  6. Image Added

    Navigate back to the project and select the Roadmap, then hover over the epic and you should be able to expand and see that story is now part of the epic on the roadmap
